2820.31

John Deere 2820.31 – TIQ, PTR, TIP / TII, ICC: Operator Not Present During Shift

Issue description

Generated when the transmission control unit detects that the forward/reverse directional reverser (shuttle) lever has been shifted into gear (Drive), but there is no valid signal from the driver seat switch indicating that the operator is actually sitting in the seat. To prevent runaway equipment, the transmission will typically disengage or enter a restricted mode.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical operator presence switch located under the seat cushion to ensure it is not physically stuck, damaged, or worn out.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running to the seat switch for loose connections, pinched wires, or corrosion.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the seat switch for proper continuity, ensuring there are no short or open circuits when weight is applied and removed.

  4. Ensure the shuttle lever is fully clicking into the Neutral or Park position, as a faulty shuttle lever sensor can trick the system into thinking the tractor is in gear.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt System Reset

Return the reverser lever to the Park or Neutral position. Sit firmly in the operator seat. Cycle the tractor's key switch (turn the power off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on) to attempt vehicle recovery and clear the active code.

  2. Access the Switch

If the code persists, tilt the seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion to access the operator presence switch.

  3. Replace the Switch

Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the switch. Twist or unbolt the faulty switch from the seat pan and install the replacement.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the multimeter test showed a wiring fault rather than a switch fault, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the seat switch harness.

  5. Final Test

Sit in the seat, start the tractor, and shift the reverser lever into forward/reverse to verify the transmission engages without throwing the 002820.31 code.
