John Deere 2828.02 – FCC (Front Console Control Unit): Issue With Signals From The Forward/Reverse Lever

Issue description

The system logs this code when the controller detects erratic, incorrect, or conflicting signals from the reverser lever on the steering column. Specifically, it means that multiple internal switches (such as the power-zero switch, move switch, and either the forward or reverse switch) are being activated simultaneously for too long a period, indicating a short circuit or mechanical failure inside the lever assembly.

Check the cause

  1. Check the physical condition of the Forward/Reverse (Shuttle) Lever. Ensure it moves smoothly into Forward, Neutral, and Reverse, and that it isn't physically loose or binding.

  2. Remove the steering column shroud and inspect the wiring harness and connector at the base of the reverser lever. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires that could cause a short circuit.

  3. Use the tractor's CommandCenter display or a diagnostic tool to check the FCC system addresses (e.g., FCC 005, FCC 007). Monitor the live status of the Drive Lever Switch and Reverse Switch to see if the module is receiving a constant 'stuck' signal.

  4. Clear the code by cycling the key switch. If the code returns immediately upon shifting, the internal microswitches of the lever are likely worn out or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, and turn off the engine.
