John Deere 2828.31 – FCC (Front Chassis Control) / TIA (Tractor Implement Automation / Cab Module): Drive Lever Position Switch Circuit Fault

The control software detects that multiple positions of the Forward/Reverse Lever are being activated simultaneously for too long a period. This indicates conflicting signals, which is physically impossible under normal operation and is caused by operator error or a mechanical/electrical failure within the lever's internal position switches. The transmission system is disabled to prevent unintended movement.

   Check for operator error: Ensure the operator is not resting their hand on the lever or holding it between detents (in a middle or raised position) during operation.

   Perform a power cycle: Set the lever to the Neutral or Park position, turn the key switch off, wait a few seconds, and cycle the tractor power to see if the code clears.

   Inspect the physical condition of the reverse drive lever: Ensure it moves smoothly and clicks firmly into its forward, neutral, and reverse detent positions without sticking.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the base of the reverse drive lever for any loose, damaged, or corroded wires that could be causing a short circuit.

   Monitor sensor/switch signals: Use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to monitor the live voltage/state signals from the reverse drive lever sensors and verify that only one position signal is active at a time.

   Safely Park the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

   Access the Lever Assembly

   Remove the steering column covers or the side console trim (depending on the tractor model's layout) to expose the base of the Forward/Reverse Lever.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the lever assembly.

   Remove the Faulty Lever

   Remove the mounting screws or retaining hardware holding the lever assembly to the steering column or console, and extract the lever.

   Install the New Lever

   Position the new Forward/Reverse Lever assembly and secure it with the OEM mounting hardware.

   Reconnect and Reassemble

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the plug is fully seated and the locking tab engages. Reinstall all plastic covers and trim pieces.

   Calibration and Testing

   Turn the key on and use the diagnostic tool to clear the 002828.31 fault code. Start the tractor and test the forward, neutral, and reverse functions to ensure proper operation and verify that the code does not return.
