John Deere 2905.05 – PTQ / PTP: Solenoid valve for H3 range change (D-E), intensity too low / R3 Proportional Solenoid Circuit Fault

Issue description

The current (amps) in the circuit is too low, indicating the controller is detecting an open circuit, high resistance, a severed wire, or a completely failed solenoid coil on the H3/R3 transmission range circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve block. Look for rubbed-through wires, rodent damage, or pinched harnesses.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the harness at the H3/R3 proportional solenoid (Y639). Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil itself. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or abnormally high resistance confirms a dead solenoid.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the solenoid tests within spec, check the continuity of the power and ground wires from the solenoid connector back to the PTQ/PTP module pins to isolate a wiring break.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Relieve hydraulic pressure in the transmission system before removing any valves.

  3. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve manifold. Identify the specific H3 (D-E) or R3 proportional solenoid (Y639).

  4. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt and carefully remove the proportional solenoid valve from the manifold block.

  5. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the manifold and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Clear the stored PTQ/PTP 002905.05 fault code using a diagnostic tool.

  7. Test

    Start the tractor and perform a transmission calibration procedure if required by your specific model's service manual, then test-drive to ensure smooth H3/R3 range shifting.
