John Deere 2906.05 – PTQ: Solenoid valve for H4 (E-F) range change, current too low

The control module is detecting lower-than-expected amperage on the circuit for the H4 (E-F) transmission range shift solenoid. This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected plug, a broken wire, or a failed (open) solenoid coil.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors routed to the transmission range solenoids for damage, disconnected plugs, or pulled wires caused by field debris.

   Ensure the electrical connector at the H4 (E-F) solenoid is secure, clean, and free of corrosion or moisture.

   Test the H4 solenoid valve coil with a multimeter by measuring resistance (ohms) across the pins. An infinite reading (OL) indicates an open internal coil and a defective solenoid.

   Check for continuity on the signal line from the PTQ module to the solenoid connector to rule out a break in the main harness.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and engage the parking brake.

   Access the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission range shift valve block on the side of the PowrQuad/AutoQuad transmission housing.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector plug (often the retaining clip breaks), splice in a new pigtail connector or repair the wire, then secure the harness out of the way of field debris.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil failed the multimeter test, disconnect the electrical plug, unbolt the defective H4 (E-F) solenoid valve, and install the replacement. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean John Deere transmission fluid (Hy-Gard) prior to installation.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery/power, use the diagnostic monitor to clear the PTQ 002906.05 code, and run the tractor through the transmission ranges to ensure the E-F shift engages properly and the code does not return.
