John Deere 2906.06 – PTQ: Gear Selector Range Solenoid C-D Amps High

The control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) drawn by the transmission range change solenoid is abnormally high. This typically indicates an electrical short circuit.

   Inspect the transmission wiring harness routing from the PTQ module to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation that could be shorting to the tractor frame.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the range change solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage that could bridge the connections.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil. If the reading is 0 ohms or significantly below the manufacturer's specification, the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   With the solenoid disconnected, check the wiring harness for continuity to ground. If the power wire shows continuity to ground, the wiring harness is the source of the short and needs to be repaired.

   Prepare the tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate the valve block

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing.

   Clean the area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the range change solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system.

   Disconnect the electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

   Remove retaining hardware

   Remove the retaining nut or mounting bolts holding the solenoid cartridge in place.

   Remove the old solenoid

   Carefully pull the old solenoid valve out of the valve block. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak.

   Lubricate O-rings

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean John Deere transmission fluid.

   Install the new solenoid

   Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and tighten the retaining nut/bolts to the specified torque.

   Reconnect the electrical connector

   Reconnect the electrical connector securely.

    Clear the fault code

    Use a diagnostic tool (such as Service ADVISOR or Jaltest) to clear the PTQ 002906.06 fault code.

    Test the tractor

    Start the tractor, check for leaks, and test drive to ensure smooth range shifting.
