John Deere 3216.09 – ECU: CAN Bus Message Cannot Be Received, Information from Aftertreatment Inlet NOx Sensor

Issue description

The Aftertreatment Inlet NOx sensor is located upstream of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and measures the nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust to determine how much Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) needs to be injected. The ".09" Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) specifically means there is a data transfer problem or a complete loss of communication over the CAN bus network between the sensor and the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple CAN codes using John Deere Service ADVISOR (e.g., 3226.09 or 3516.09). Multiple codes indicate a shared CAN bus wiring fault, blown fuse, or damaged harness rather than a single failed sensor.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Aftertreatment Inlet NOx Sensor for melted wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Verify the sensor is receiving proper switched battery supply voltage and has a solid ground for its internal heater element.

  4. Verify the integrity of the CAN High and CAN Low signals at the sensor connector.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or a corroded connector, repair the harness. (Note: Fixing wires alone will not clear locked aftertreatment codes; a diagnostic tool is required to clear them later).

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If power, ground, and CAN lines are intact, the sensor's internal module has failed. Remove the faulty Inlet NOx sensor from the exhaust pipe upstream of the SCR catalyst.

  4. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM NOx sensor into the exhaust. Ensure the wiring is routed safely away from extreme exhaust heat and secured properly. Reinstall the heat shield if equipped.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. You must connect John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible heavy-duty diagnostic scanner) to clear the locked Aftertreatment codes from the ECU.

  6. Verify Repair

    Run the engine and perform an emissions test or forced regeneration to verify that the ECU is successfully receiving data from the new sensor and that NOx levels are within regulatory limits.
