John Deere 3246.12 – ECU: DPF Outlet Temperature Fault / DPF Outlet Temperature Error

Issue description

The exhaust filter temperature module has detected a problem with measuring the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) outlet temperature. This indicates that the temperature at the outlet of the DPF is either reading as an invalid signal, or it has exceeded safe operational limits. This is typically caused by a failed temperature sensor, damaged wiring, or a malfunction within the DPF system itself (such as excessive soot accumulation or a failed regeneration cycle).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the DPF outlet temperature sensor and its associated wiring harness for signs of physical damage, melting, frayed wires, or loose/corroded connectors.

  2. Using a diagnostic scan tool, compare the DPF Outlet Temperature reading to the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) Inlet and DPF Inlet temperature sensors when the engine is cold (they should all read roughly ambient temperature).

  3. Test the sensor circuit for continuity and correct voltage levels to rule out a short or open circuit in the wiring harness.

  4. Check for signs of physical exhaust blockage or excessive soot/ash accumulation that might be hindering exhaust flow and artificially spiking the temperature.

  1. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or connectors, repair or replace the affected harness sections.

  2. Replace Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor provides erratic, out-of-range, or no readings, replace the DPF Outlet Temperature Sensor (or the Exhaust Filter Temperature Module, depending on how it is configured on your specific engine).

  3. Manual Regeneration

    If the code was triggered by an actual over-temperature event due to soot buildup, initiate a manual (stationary) DPF regeneration via the diagnostic tool to safely clear the soot accumulation.

  4. Reset and Verify

    Clear the stored 003246.12 fault code from the ECU. Run the engine and monitor the DPF operation and temperature readings to ensure they remain within normal operational ranges.
