John Deere 3464.06 – ECU (Engine Control Unit): Air Throttle Actuator Drive Circuit Has Low Resistance / Air Throttle Actuator, Resistance Too Low
Issue description
The resistance in the air throttle actuator circuit is abnormally low, typically indicating a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, the connectors, or an internal short within the actuator itself. This fault often causes the engine to derate, limit power, or alter the air-fuel mixture to protect the engine.

Check the cause
Inspect the air throttle actuator wiring harness and connectors for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could be causing a short to ground.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the actuator circuit pins. A reading below the specified OEM threshold confirms a short circuit.
Disconnect the actuator to isolate the component. If the short circuit (low resistance) remains on the harness side, the wiring is the issue. If the harness tests fine, the actuator has failed internally.
If using John Deere Service Advisor, run a Harness Diagnostic Mode test with the engine off to actuate the engine's solenoids and valves to help isolate the failure.
Remove the air throttle from the intake and check if the butterfly valve shaft is snapped or mechanically seized, which can sometimes precipitate electrical faults.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic tests isolated the short to the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness and replace any corroded connector pins.
Actuator Replacement
If the actuator is internally shorted, unbolt the faulty Air Throttle Actuator from the intake manifold (located in-line after the charge air cooler and before the intake manifold). Install the new actuator and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back into the actuator.
Calibration
CRITICAL STEP. You must use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service Advisor) to perform a recalibration of the new air throttle actuator. This aligns its operational range with the ECU's expectations.
Clear and Test
Clear the 003464.06 fault code from the ECU, reset the system, and run the engine under load to verify the code does not return and the engine no longer derates.
Parts you might need
