John Deere 3465.05 – ECU: Exhaust Throttle Actuator Drive Circuit Has High Resistance

Issue description

The circuit resistance is too high, indicating an open circuit. This means the controller is unable to complete the electrical circuit to drive the actuator, typically due to a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or an internal open failure within the actuator's motor/coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the exhaust throttle actuator for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, corrosion, or chafed wires

  2. Use a multimeter to check continuity and resistance of the drive circuit wiring between the ECU harness connector and the actuator connector to isolate any breaks

  3. Measure the internal resistance across the pins of the exhaust throttle actuator itself to check for an internal open failure (infinite resistance)

Repair steps

  1. Wiring Repair

    If the diagnostic tests reveal a broken wire or damaged connector, repair the harness or replace the connector pigtail.

  2. Actuator Replacement Preparation

    If the actuator is internally open, prepare to replace it. Because many of these actuators are cooled by engine coolant, drain the engine coolant into a clean container.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the actuator. Remove the exhaust throttle coolant supply and return lines. Loosen and remove the exhaust throttle valve clamp(s) and remove the faulty actuator and gasket.

  4. Installation

    Install the new exhaust throttle actuator with a new gasket. Secure it using the exhaust throttle valve clamp. Reconnect the coolant supply and return lines, and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Refill Fluids

    Refill the engine with coolant and bleed the cooling system to remove any air pockets.

  6. Calibration

    Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to the machine. You must perform an "exhaust throttle actuator learn value reset" (calibration) so the ECU can learn the end-stops of the new actuator.

  7. Clear and Test

    Clear the 003465.05 fault code from the ECU. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and the actuator operates smoothly.
