John Deere 3465.07 – ECU: Air Throttle Actuator Fault / Exhaust Throttle Actuator Desired and Actual Position Mismatch During a Learn

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a discrepancy between the position it is commanding the throttle actuator to be in and the actual physical position reported by the actuator's position sensor. This mismatch is typically caused by mechanical binding (often due to heavy soot buildup), a snapped internal actuator shaft, or a failing position sensor.

   Visually inspect the air or exhaust throttle actuator and its wiring harness for signs of damage, melting, or loose connections.

   Using John Deere Service Advisor, run a Harness Diagnostic Mode test to actuate all engine solenoids and actuators with the engine off.

   Remove the throttle valve from the intake/exhaust piping but leave the electrical connector plugged in. Run the diagnostic test again to visually observe if the butterfly valve is moving smoothly (if the motor runs but the valve doesn't move, the internal shaft is likely snapped).

   Inspect the inside of the valve for heavy soot buildup or carbon packing that could be physically restricting the valve's range of motion.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Remove the Actuator Assembly

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the throttle actuator. Remove the V-band clamps or mounting bolts securing the throttle valve assembly to the intake/exhaust piping.

   Clean or Replace

   If the valve is heavily caked in soot but mechanically sound, clean it thoroughly with an appropriate carbon solvent and verify smooth operation. If the actuator motor is dead, the internal shaft is broken, or the sensor has failed, the entire valve/actuator assembly must be replaced.

   Install New Components

   Install the new throttle valve assembly using new gaskets (do not reuse old metal gaskets to prevent boost/exhaust leaks). Secure the V-band clamps or bolts to OEM torque specs. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Software Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. You must use John Deere Service Advisor to perform an 'Air/Exhaust Throttle Actuator Learn Value Reset' (calibration). If you do not calibrate the new actuator, the ECU will immediately throw a calibration error code (003465.13).

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reset the ECU to clear the 003465.07 code. Start the engine and test the actuator across its full operational range to ensure the derate condition is lifted.
