John Deere 3465.09 – ECU: Exhaust Throttle Actuator Loss of Communication
Issue description
The engine's control module has lost the data link or electrical communication with the variable geometry turbo's exhaust throttle actuator, preventing it from commanding or reading the actuator's position.

Check the cause
Check for related ECU codes (003465.05, 003465.06, 003465.31) that might indicate a circuit issue rather than a dead actuator
Inspect the wiring harness and Exhaust Throttle Actuator (Y5402) drive circuits (e.g., pins 5 and 12 on Connector 2) for chafing, melted wires, or loose pins
Physically inspect the actuator in the exhaust stream for heavy soot build-up that can jam the mechanism and cause communication timeouts
Repair steps
Safety First
Disconnect the machine's batteries. Ensure the engine and exhaust components are completely cool before servicing.
Drain Coolant
Place a drain pan under the engine and drain the cooling system.
Disconnect Lines and Wiring
Disconnect the electrical connector (Y5402) from the actuator. Disconnect the Exhaust Throttle Actuator Coolant Supply Line and Coolant Return Line.
Remove the Actuator
Unbolt the actuator assembly from the exhaust/turbocharger housing.
Install the New Actuator
Mount the new actuator and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect Systems
Reinstall the coolant supply and return lines. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Refill and Bleed
Refill the engine with John Deere approved coolant and bleed the cooling system to remove air pockets.
Calibration
Reconnect the batteries. Clear the ECU fault codes. The ECU may require an actuator learn procedure upon startup.
