John Deere 3465.12 – ECU: Exhaust Throttle Actuator Internal Error

The exhaust throttle actuator is a component located in the exhaust stream (typically just after the turbocharger) that restricts exhaust flow to help the engine reach operating temperature faster and to assist with the exhaust aftertreatment system (DPF regeneration).

   Inspect the exhaust throttle valve mechanism for heavy soot buildup or carbon binding that could be causing the internal motor to overwork and fail.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the exhaust throttle actuator for melted wires, chafing, or corrosion in the connector pins.

   Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to run an active test on the exhaust throttle. Listen for the actuator sweeping. If it binds or fails to move, the internal error is confirmed.

   Cool Down

   Ensure the engine has been turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled. The actuator is mounted near the turbocharger and gets extremely hot.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the ECU is powered down.

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the electrical connector from the exhaust throttle actuator.

   Remove Actuator

   Remove the mounting bolts/V-band clamps securing the exhaust throttle actuator assembly to the exhaust piping.

   Inspect the Valve

   With the actuator removed, manually check the butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe. If it is seized with soot, clean the housing thoroughly with an appropriate carbon solvent. If the valve itself is permanently damaged, the entire housing may need replacement.

   Install New Actuator

   Mount the replacement exhaust throttle actuator and torque the hardware to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the negative battery cable.

   Calibrate and Clear

   Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR (or an equivalent heavy-duty scan tool). Clear the inactive 003465.12 code. You must perform the "Exhaust Throttle Actuator Learn/Calibration" procedure so the ECU can learn the new actuator's end-stops (failure to do so may trigger code 003465.13 - Calibration Error).
