3465.16

John Deere 3465.16 – ECU: Exhaust Throttle Actuator Temperature Moderately High

Issue description

The temperature sensor within or associated with the exhaust throttle actuator has detected heat levels exceeding normal operational thresholds, which can affect the actuator's ability to manage exhaust backpressure and aftertreatment temperatures.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related electrical ECU codes (e.g., 003465.31, 003465.05, 003465.06) that might indicate a circuit issue rather than a physical temperature failure.

  2. Inspect the engine interface wiring harness connecting to the exhaust throttle actuator for loose connectors, damaged wiring, corrosion, or poor connections.

  3. Check the exhaust tube and surrounding aftertreatment system for leaks or blockages that could cause abnormal heat buildup near the actuator.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the engine and exhaust system are completely cool. Relieve any system pressure before disconnecting lines. Protect hands and body from fluids or soot.

  2. Disconnect Electricals

Unplug the wiring harness connector from the exhaust throttle actuator.

  3. Remove Linkage

Disconnect the linkage connecting the exhaust throttle actuator to the exhaust throttle valve.

  4. Dismount the Actuator

Remove the flange nuts (4 used) and cap screws securing the exhaust throttle actuator assembly and exhaust tube to the bracket.

  5. Remove Gasket

Remove the exhaust tube and discard the used exhaust gasket. Never reuse the old gasket.

  6. Install New Actuator

Mount the new exhaust throttle actuator onto the bracket. Install the flange nuts and tighten to the specification of 20 N·m (177 lb.-in.).

  7. Reassemble

Install the linkage to the exhaust throttle valve and the actuator. Install the exhaust tube with a new gasket and tighten the cap screws to specification.

  8. Finalize

Reconnect the electrical harness, clear the ECU fault codes, and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
