Issue description

The exhaust throttle actuator temperature is extremely high, which can be caused by a physically stuck valve forcing the actuator to overwork, or a lack of coolant flow on liquid-cooled variants.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exhaust throttle actuator wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or high/low resistance.

  2. Check the exhaust throttle valve (located after the turbocharger) for heavy soot or carbon buildup that could cause mechanical binding and force the actuator to overwork.

  3. On liquid-cooled variants, verify that the coolant supply and return lines to the exhaust throttle actuator are not pinched or blocked, ensuring proper cooling flow.

  4. Verify the sensor supply voltage to the actuator to ensure it is receiving proper power from the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the engine, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system and engine coolant to cool completely. Relieve any pressure in the cooling system.

  2. Disconnect Lines

    Disconnect the electrical connector to the actuator. If equipped with coolant lines, pinch off or drain the coolant, then disconnect the Exhaust Throttle Actuator Coolant Supply and Return lines.

  3. Remove the Assembly

    Remove the cap screws, flange nuts, and the exhaust tube from the exhaust throttle actuator assembly flange. Discard the used exhaust gasket.

  4. Disconnect Linkage

    Disconnect the linkage connecting the actuator to the exhaust throttle valve.

  5. Install New Actuator

    Install the new exhaust throttle actuator onto the bracket. Install the flange nuts and tighten to the OEM specification (e.g., 20 N·m or 177 lb.-in.). Reconnect the linkage to the valve.

  6. Reassemble

    Install the exhaust tube with a new gasket and tighten the cap screws to specification. Reconnect the coolant lines and the electrical connector.

  7. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the engine with coolant and bleed the cooling system.

  8. ECU Calibration

    Connect the John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool. Clear the fault codes and perform an 'Exhaust Throttle Actuator Learn' procedure so the ECU can calibrate the new actuator's end stops.
