3473.03

John Deere 3473.03 – ECU: Air Throttle Actuator Signal Out of Range High

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage from the air throttle actuator is exceeding the upper limit, which specifically points to a short circuit to 12V in the actuator's circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the physical condition of the air throttle actuator and its sensors. Check for signs of wear, damage, or a snapped internal butterfly valve shaft.

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the ECU to the actuator to verify there are no rubbed wires shorting to a power source.

  3. Harness Diagnostic Mode Test: Using John Deere Service ADVISOR, run a Harness Diagnostic Mode test. Remove the air throttle from the intake manifold (keeping the electrical connector plugged in) to physically watch if the actuator attempts to sweep its full range of motion.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the machine, disconnect battery power, and ensure the engine is cool.

  2. Removal

Disconnect the charge air cooler outlet piping/hoses connected to the air throttle actuator.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the actuator.

  4. Dismount

Unbolt the faulty air throttle actuator from the intake manifold and remove it.

  5. Installation

Mount the new air throttle actuator (intake valve) using new gaskets/seals if required. Torque bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the air piping and the electrical harness.

  6. Recalibration

Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR, navigate to the engine control tests, and perform the Air Throttle Actuator Learn Value Reset (or calibration test).

  7. Clear and Test

Reset the ECU to clear the 003473.03 fault code. Start the engine and test the actuator across its full operational range to ensure the code does not return and there is no engine derate.
