John Deere 3509.03 – Multiple (HCC, CCU, ECU, AIC, PTR): Sensor Supply #1 Voltage Out of Range High
Issue description
The control unit has detected a voltage on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit that is higher than the normal operating specification (typically exceeding 5.2 to 5.25 volts). This is usually caused by a short circuit to a higher voltage source (such as a 12V battery line) or an internal failure of the module's voltage regulator.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the 5V supply circuit wiring harness and connectors for signs of a short circuit, especially where wiring might rub against 12V power lines.
Use a multimeter to measure the voltage output at the 5V supply pins on the affected module to confirm if it exceeds the 5.2V specification.
Disconnect sensors powered by this 5V circuit one at a time (e.g., Rear Hitch Position Sensor, Rear Hitch Draft Sensor) to see if voltage returns to normal 5V, indicating an internally shorted sensor.
If wiring is isolated and the module still outputs excessive voltage on the 5V pin, check the internal voltage regulator of the control unit for failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the fault lies in the wiring harness, a specific sensor, or the control module itself.
Repair Wiring
If a short to a 12V source is found in the harness, repair the damaged wires, ensure all connections are secure, and clean any corrosion from the connectors.
Replace Faulty Components
If a sensor was found to be shorting the circuit, replace the affected sensor. If the control unit (e.g., HCC) is outputting battery voltage on the 5V reference circuit due to a failed internal regulator, replace the control unit.
Recalibrate and Update
Ensure the control unit software is up-to-date. If the Hitch Control Unit (HCC) or a hitch sensor was replaced, perform the Hitch Control Unit Calibration via the John Deere display/Service ADVISOR.
Verify Repair
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and monitor the sensor supply voltage to ensure it remains within the specified 4.8V to 5.2V range. Clear the stored 003509.03 DTC.
