John Deere 3509.03 – PTD (Range Module Direct Drive): Sensor Supply 1 Voltage Out of Range High
Issue description
The control module has detected that the 5-volt reference circuit—which supplies power to various sensors—is outputting a voltage higher than its normal operating range (typically greater than 5.20V to 5.25V for longer than 2 seconds). This overvoltage condition usually indicates that the 5V circuit is shorted to a 12V power source, or that the internal voltage regulator inside the control module has failed. To prevent damage to the 5V sensors, the module will degrade or disable the functionality of the affected components.

Check the cause
Measure the 5V sensor supply circuitry at the PTD module with a multimeter to confirm the overvoltage condition (greater than 5.2V).
Inspect the transmission wiring harness and connectors for signs of a short circuit to a 12V power line, looking specifically for chafed, melted, or pinched wires.
Disconnect the sensors powered by this 5V circuit (such as transmission oil pressure or speed sensors) one at a time. If the voltage drops back to normal, the disconnected sensor is internally shorted.
Test the PTD module's output pin with the wiring harness completely isolated. If it still supplies more than 5.2V, the module's internal voltage regulator has failed.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Address Wiring Issues
If a short to a 12V source was found during diagnostics, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using approved splicing methods and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Faulty Sensors
If a sensor was found to be internally shorted, remove and replace it.
Replace the PTD Module (If Necessary)
If the internal voltage regulator is faulty, the PTD Transmission Control Module must be replaced. Disconnect the module's METRI-PACK connectors, unbolt the unit, and install the replacement.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Reconnect all sensors, harnesses, and the battery.
Software/Calibration
If the PTD module was replaced, ensure the new unit is flashed with the latest software using John Deere Service ADVISOR. Recalibrate the voltage supply and transmission settings.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 003509.03 fault code. Start the tractor and monitor the sensor supply voltage to ensure it remains within the 4.8V–5.2V range. Perform a test drive to verify normal DirectDrive transmission operation.
