John Deere 3509.04 – CCU, ECU, PTR, AIC, LCC: Sensor Supply #1 Voltage Out of Range Low

Issue description

The control unit has detected that the 5-volt reference circuit (Sensor Supply 1) has dropped below its specified operating range (typically below 4.8V or 4.44V). This under-voltage condition is usually caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted sensor that is pulling the 5-volt reference voltage down, which may cause the control unit to enter a fail-safe or degraded mode.

Check the cause

  1. Identify and isolate which sensors are powered by the Sensor Supply 1 circuit for your specific machine and module.

  2. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage output at the control unit's 5V supply pins (should be ~5V; below 4.8V indicates a fault).

  3. Disconnect the sensors on this 5V circuit one at a time, monitoring the voltage at the supply pin after each disconnection to identify an internally shorted sensor.

  4. If all sensors are unplugged and voltage remains low, inspect the wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation causing a short to ground.

  5. If the wiring harness tests good and all sensors are unplugged but voltage is still low, verify if the control unit itself has an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground before repairing wiring or replacing components.

  2. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If the diagnostic disconnect test isolated a specific sensor, replace it. Ensure the connector is free of corrosion and apply dielectric grease if recommended by the manual.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a short to ground was found in the harness, locate the chafed section. Splice and solder the damaged 5V supply wire, and seal it with dual-wall heat shrink. Reroute the harness away from sharp edges or high-heat sources.

  4. Replace Control Unit

    If the CCU/ECU is internally faulted, remove the mounting hardware and harness connectors. Install the new module. Note: A new CCU or ECU will require programming/calibration via John Deere Service ADVISOR to match the machine's configuration.

  5. Clear and Retest

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 003509.04 code. Operate the machine to verify the 5V reference remains stable and the code does not return.
