John Deere 3509.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Sensor Supply 1 Voltage Low
Issue description
The control module has detected that the voltage on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit #1 has dropped below the specified operating range (typically below 4.8V or 4.75V). This under-voltage condition almost always indicates a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness, a failed sensor pulling the voltage down, or an internal fault within the control unit itself.

Check the cause
Verify the Code: Restart the engine to see if the active Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) reappears. Sometimes communication errors can be cleared by a simple restart.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Conduct a thorough visual inspection of the 5-volt sensor supply circuit wiring. Look for chafing, pinched wires, melted insulation, or corrosion that could cause a short to ground.
Test Voltage Output at the Controller: Disconnect the sensor harness from the ECU and use a multimeter to verify the voltage output directly at the controller pins. It should read a stable 5 volts. If the voltage is low at the bare controller, the ECU has an internal fault.
Isolate the Shorted Sensor: If the ECU outputs 5 volts but the voltage drops when the harness is plugged in, a sensor on that circuit is likely shorted. Disconnect the sensors on the Supply #1 circuit (e.g., Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, Steering Wheel Position Sensor) one at a time. If disconnecting a specific sensor causes the 5-volt reference to return to normal, that sensor is the culprit.

Power Down
Turn off the machine, place it in park, and disconnect the battery negative terminal if repairing wiring.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using proper splicing techniques and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Faulty Sensor
If a specific sensor was found to be pulling the voltage down, remove the faulty sensor and install an OEM replacement. Ensure the connector is free of debris and corrosion before plugging it in.
Replace/Update the ECU
If the ECU itself is failing to output 5 volts, it must be replaced. Note that replacing an ECU requires a John Deere dealer to program the unit with the correct software and injector calibration data.
Recalibrate and Clear Codes
Reconnect all components, turn the key on, and clear the stored fault codes. Start the engine and monitor the sensor supply voltage to ensure it remains stable above 4.8V.
