John Deere 3509.04 – Multiple (ECU, CCU, PTR, AIC, LCC, HCC): Sensor Supply 1 Voltage Out of Range Low
Issue description
The control unit has detected that the 5-volt reference circuit (Sensor Supply #1) has dropped below its specified operating range. This is almost always caused by a short to ground in the 5V wiring harness, an internally shorted 5V sensor pulling the circuit down, or an internal failure within the control module's power supply.

Check the cause
Identify the Module: Note the prefix of the code (e.g., ECU, CCU, HCC) to determine which wiring harness and group of sensors to troubleshoot.
Sensor Isolation Test (The Unplug Method): Turn the key ON (engine OFF). Monitor the active fault code or use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the module's 5V output pin. Unplug the sensors on that circuit one by one. If the voltage jumps back up to ~5.0V, the sensor you just unplugged is internally shorted.
Harness Inspection: If unplugging all sensors does not restore the 5V reference, use a multimeter to check the wiring harness for continuity to ground. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the machine's chassis.
Module Output Test: Disconnect the harness directly at the affected control module. Measure the 5V supply pin directly on the module. If it still outputs low voltage with nothing connected, the module itself has an internal fault.
Repair steps
Disconnect Battery
Before repairing wiring or replacing modules, disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Replace Faulty Component
If a sensor was shorted, replace the specific sensor identified during the isolation test. If the harness was shorted, repair the chafed wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section. If the module failed, replace the control module.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Plug all sensors back in and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the key ON. The code should change from Active to Stored. Clear the codes. If a module or a critical position sensor was replaced, perform the necessary calibration procedures via the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool or the in-cab monitor.
