John Deere 3509.04 – PTD (Powertrain Module D): 5-Volt Supply Voltage, Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The control software detects that the voltage at the positive lead of the 5-volt sensor supply circuit has dropped below 4.75 V (or 4.8 V) for longer than 2 seconds, indicating a short circuit to ground in the wiring, a failed sensor, or an internal fault with the module's voltage regulator.

Check the cause
Inspect the transmission wiring harness and connectors for signs of damage, wear, corrosion, or loose connections that could cause a short to ground
Use a multimeter to test the 5-volt sensor supply circuitry at the sensors to verify if the voltage output is below the 4.75 V threshold
Disconnect the 5-volt sensors on the PTD circuit one by one (e.g., transmission speed sensors, pressure sensors). If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal (approx. 5.0V), the unplugged sensor is internally shorted
If the wiring is intact and all sensors are unplugged but the voltage at the module's output pin is still low, check the internal voltage regulator within the PTD control unit
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before repairing electrical components.
Rectify Electrical Shorts
Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors identified during the diagnostic phase. Ensure all splices are secure and properly insulated.
Replace Faulty Sensors
If a specific sensor was found to be pulling the reference voltage down, replace it with a new OEM sensor.
Address the Control Unit
If the PTD control unit's internal voltage regulator has failed, the PTD module must be replaced. Ensure the new module's software is updated and reprogrammed by a qualified technician or dealer.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Reconnect all sensors and restore battery power.
Reset the ECU
Clear the 003509.04 fault code from the PTD module's memory.
Confirm Operation
Start the tractor and monitor the sensor supply voltage during operation. Confirm that the voltage remains stable within the specified range (above 4.8 V) and that full transmission functionality has been restored.
