John Deere 3509.04 – PTR (Power Train Reverser): 5-Volt Sensor Supply Voltage is out of range low

Issue description

The control module has detected the 5-Volt Sensor Supply Voltage is out of range low (typically below 4.8V or 4.5V) for longer than 2 seconds. This condition usually points to a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed sensor on that 5V circuit pulling the reference voltage down, or an internal failure of the voltage regulator within the control module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors related to the PTR sensor supply voltage. Look for chafed wires, improper insulation, corrosion, or moisture that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Test Voltage Circuitry: Use a digital multimeter to test the 5V sensor supply circuitry. Check the voltage output directly at the PTR module pins to see if it is outputting 5V.

  3. Isolate the Sensors: If the voltage is low, unplug the sensors on that specific 5V circuit (such as the clutch pedal position sensor or transmission pressure sensors) one at a time. If the voltage jumps back up to 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted and is the root cause.

  4. Examine the PTR Module: If all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests good (no shorts to ground), but the PTR module is still outputting low voltage (e.g., under 4.8V), the module itself has an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to ground was found in the harness, repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If isolating the sensors revealed a shorted sensor, remove and replace the faulty sensor.

  4. Replace the PTR Control Unit

    If the module's internal voltage regulator has failed, remove the mounting cap screws, disconnect the harness, and install a new PTR control unit.

  5. Update Software & Calibrate

    If the PTR module is replaced, it must be flashed with the latest software using John Deere Service ADVISOR. You will also need to perform transmission and clutch calibrations (e.g., clutch pedal sensor calibration, transmission fill volume calibration).

  6. Clear Codes and Verify

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored 003509.04 code, and operate the tractor to monitor the sensor supply voltage and ensure the code does not return.
