John Deere 3509.04 – Suspended Front Axle (SFA) Control Unit: Sensor Supply 1 Voltage Out of Range Low

The control unit detects that the 5-volt reference supply circuit for its sensors has dropped below the specified operating range (typically below 4.8V or 4.5V for more than 2 seconds). This under-voltage condition is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor pulling the voltage down, or an internal failure within the control module's voltage regulator. The SFA module may enter a fail-safe mode, limiting suspension functionality.

   Inspect the 5-volt supply circuit wiring harness and connectors routed to the SFA sensors for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, corrosion, or loose connections.

   Measure the voltage output on the 5V sensor supply circuit at the sensor connectors to verify if it is below 4.8V.

   Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting the SFA sensors one at a time to see if the 5V reference voltage returns to normal (approx. 5.0V), indicating an internally shorted sensor.

   Test the SFA module output with all sensors disconnected and wiring verified to check for an internal module fault.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Address Wiring Issues

   If the visual inspection revealed damaged wiring, repair the wire breaks or replace the damaged connector pigtails. Ensure all repairs are properly insulated and secured away from pinch points.

   Replace Faulty Sensors

   If the isolation test identified a shorted sensor (e.g., the suspension position sensor), remove and replace it.

   Replace the SFA Module

   If the SFA control unit itself is failing to produce the 5V reference, remove the defective E-box/module and install a replacement or remanufactured unit.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all sensors and batteries. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard display) to clear the 003509.04 fault code.
