John Deere 3510.04 – ECU: Sensor Supply #2 Voltage Out of Range Low

Issue description

The ECU detects that the voltage on the 5V supply circuit 2 has dropped below the acceptable threshold (typically below 4.65V - 4.8V). This is almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, or an internally shorted sensor that is pulling the entire 5V reference circuit down.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Voltage: Use a multimeter to measure the voltage output at the ECU for Sensor Supply 2. Confirm it is reading below the 5V specification.

  2. Sensor Isolation Test (Drop Test): With the key ON (engine off), unplug the sensors on this circuit one at a time (starting with the Crankcase Pressure Sensor). If the voltage on the circuit jumps back up to 5V when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Harness Inspection: If unplugging the sensors does not restore the 5V reference, inspect the wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinching that is causing the 5V wire to short directly to the chassis ground.

  4. ECU Pin Check: Check the ECU connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins. If the wiring is completely isolated and good, but the ECU still fails to output 5V, the ECU may have an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable before repairing any wiring.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If a short to ground was found in the harness during diagnostics, splice and repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor (If Applicable)

    If the Crankcase Pressure Sensor was found to be pulling the voltage down, remove the faulty sensor from its port near the crankcase ventilation filter. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all sensors and the battery. Turn the ignition ON. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic scanner) to clear the inactive 003510.04 code.

  5. Test Run

    Start the engine and monitor the ECU Sensor Supply 2 voltage data stream. Verify that the voltage remains stable at 5V and the fault code does not return.
