John Deere 3511.03 – ECU: Sensor Supply Voltage 3 Out of Range High

Issue description

The controller has detected a supply voltage above the normal specification on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit #3. This specific 5V reference circuit provides power to several critical engine sensors. When active, the system will often disable Active Exhaust Filter cleaning, and continued operation may result in engine derate or loss of machine availability.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power to the machine to determine if the code is an intermittent glitch.

  2. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness connecting the ECU to the sensors on the #3 5V supply circuit for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses.

  3. Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting the sensors on this circuit one at a time to check for an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the Battery

    Before performing electrical repairs, disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the ECU.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    Using a multimeter, check the voltage on the #3 5V supply circuit at the sensor connectors. If it reads significantly higher than 5 volts (e.g., 12V), there is a short to power.

  3. Unplug Sensors

    Unplug the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor, Low Fuel Pressure Supply Sensor, Air Throttle Position Sensor, and Exhaust Throttle Position Sensor one by one.

  4. Repair Wiring or Replace Sensor

    If unplugging a sensor corrects the circuit voltage, replace that specific sensor. If all sensors are unplugged and the circuit still shows high voltage, the wiring harness is shorted to a power wire. Locate the short in the harness and repair the damaged wires using OEM-approved splicing techniques, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all sensors and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a John Deere Service Advisor tool (or equivalent scanner) to clear the inactive codes. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that exhaust filter cleaning is available again.
