Issue description

The control unit has detected that the 5-volt reference supply circuit #4 is outputting a voltage above the specified limit (typically greater than 5.25V). This condition almost always indicates a short circuit to a higher voltage source, such as a 12-volt battery line.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness and all connectors associated with the #4 sensor supply circuit for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to a 12-volt power source.

  2. Use a digital multimeter to measure the output voltage from the ECU to the sensors on the #4 circuit to confirm if the voltage is spiking above the normal 4.75V - 5.25V operating range.

  3. Isolate the short by disconnecting the sensors on the #4 supply circuit one by one. If the voltage drops back to normal (or the code changes to an open circuit/low voltage code), the short is internal to a specific sensor. If the voltage remains high, the short is in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Repair or Replace the Harness

    Once the short to the 12-volt source is located, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using proper splicing techniques, or replace the entire engine wiring harness if the damage is extensive.

  3. Replace Damaged Sensors

    If a sensor was internally shorted or damaged by the 12-volt spike, replace the affected sensor.

  4. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the inactive 003512.03 code.

  5. Test the System

    Start the engine and monitor the #4 sensor supply voltage to ensure it remains a steady 5 volts. Verify that the machine operates without triggering the code again.
