John Deere 3513.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Sensor Supply #5 Voltage Out of Range Low

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit #5, which provides power to specific sensors (such as the Hand Throttle Position Sensor), is experiencing abnormally low voltage, almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within one of the sensors on that specific 5V circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect sensors on the Sensor Supply #5 circuit one at a time (starting with the Hand Throttle Position Sensor). If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal, the disconnected sensor is internally shorted.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the Hand Throttle Position Sensor for chafing, bare wires rubbing against the frame (short to ground), or pinched wires.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and ECU connectors to check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the 5V supply to a ground pin.

  4. Perform a Multimeter Voltage Test: With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, measure the voltage at the sensor connector's supply pin. It should read approximately 5.0 volts. If it reads 0V or significantly less, the short is in the wiring harness or the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on level, sturdy ground and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Hand Throttle Position Sensor and trace its wiring harness.

    Usually located in the cab near the operator controls or on the side console.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector.

    If the connector is corroded or damaged, splice in a new connector pigtail.

  4. Remove the mounting hardware securing the Hand Throttle Position Sensor.

    Perform this if the diagnostic checks proved the sensor is internally shorted (voltage returned to 5V when unplugged).

  5. Install the new sensor and secure the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harness.

    Ensure the connector clicks into place and is free of moisture.

  7. Repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink butt connectors and re-loom the harness.

    Perform this if the harness was the issue (chafed wires) to prevent future rubbing.

  8. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and clear the ECU fault codes.

    Use a diagnostic tool or the machine's onboard display.

  9. Start the engine and operate the hand throttle.

    Verify smooth RPM changes and ensure the 003513.04 code does not return.
