3516.14

John Deere 3516.14 – ECU: Aftertreatment DEF Contaminated

Issue description

Indicates that the aftertreatment DEF concentration sensor has detected an incorrect fluid or contaminated fluid in the DEF tank. The sensor measures the urea concentration, which must be strictly maintained (typically around 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water) for the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to function properly.

Check the cause

  1. Use a refractometer to test the DEF concentration in the tank. It should read approximately 32.5%.

  2. Inspect the fluid for dirt, water dilution, or incorrect fluids (like diesel fuel or coolant) mixed into the DEF tank.

  3. Check the DEF quality sensor (located on the DEF tank header assembly) for visible obstructions, debris, or crystallization.

  4. Inspect the electrical wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or poor grounding.

Repair steps

  1. Drain the Tank

If the DEF is tested and proven to be contaminated or of the wrong concentration, completely drain the fluid from the DEF tank.

  2. Flush the System

If severe contamination (like dirt or oil) is present, flush the DEF tank and lines to prevent damage to the dosing injector and SCR catalyst.

  3. Refill

Refill the tank with fresh, ISO 22241-certified Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

  4. Replace Sensor

If the fluid is perfect but the code persists, the DEF quality sensor/header assembly has likely failed internally (often due to ammonia gas corrosion on the circuit board) and must be replaced.

  5. Reset the ECU

Connect a diagnostic tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR) to reset the ECU and clear the locked aftertreatment fault codes.

  6. Test the System

Run the machine to ensure the system functions correctly with the new fluid/sensor and that the vehicle exits any engine power derate modes.
