Issue description

The controller is detecting a voltage significantly higher than 5 volts (usually a short to the 12V battery circuit) on the 5-volt reference circuit that powers various engine and chassis sensors. Definition varies depending on the machine family.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Active Codes: Verify if the code is active or stored. If active, do not replace the controller immediately.

  2. Sensor Isolation Test (Sensor Short Cause): Disconnect the sensors powered by Sensor Supply 1 one at a time (e.g., foot throttle, hydraulic pressure, swashplate sensors). If the voltage drops back to normal (5V) and the code goes inactive, that specific sensor is internally shorted to 12V.

  3. Harness Inspection (Wiring Short Cause): Inspect the wiring harness between the controller and the sensors. Look for areas where the 5V supply wire might be chafing against a 12V power wire or the chassis.

  4. Controller Output Test (Controller Failure Cause): With all sensors on the circuit disconnected, measure the voltage at the controller's Sensor Supply 1 pin. If it is outputting 12V instead of 5V, the controller itself has an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable before repairing wiring.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to a 12V source was found in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wire. Splice in a new section of wire using environmentally sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.

  3. Replace Shorted Sensor

    If the isolation test proved a sensor was feeding 12V back into the 5V line, remove the faulty sensor and install an OEM replacement. Torque to specification.

  4. Replace Controller

    If the controller is internally shorted and outputting 12V on the 5V pin, remove the harness connectors, unbolt the module, and install a new unit. Note: A new controller will likely require flashing/calibration via John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the fault codes. Start the machine and verify the code does not return.
