Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is detecting that its internal 5-volt power supply #1 (which provides reference voltage to various engine sensors) is dropping below the normal operational threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed sensor internally shorting the 5V circuit, or an internal failure within the ECU itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the machine's main batteries and charging system to ensure proper system voltage, as general low voltage can trigger supply faults.

  2. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, rubbing, or melted insulation that could cause the 5V supply wire to short against the engine block or chassis.

  3. Check for loose or disconnected plugs, particularly the main harness plug going into the side of the block near the flywheel end.

  4. Isolate the 5V circuit to check for a shorted sensor: disconnect the sensors on the 'Supply Voltage 1' circuit one at a time with the key ON. If the 5V reference returns to normal when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.

  5. Test the ECU: if all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests good (no shorts to ground), but the ECU is still not outputting 5 volts on the supply pin, the ECU has an internal failure.

    Reconnect and lock any loose harness connectors.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to ground is found in the harness, splice and repair the damaged wires using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace ECU

    If the ECU's internal power supply has failed, remove the battery cables, unbolt the ECU, and install a replacement. Note: A new ECU will require programming/flashing by a John Deere dealer to match the machine's specific software payload.
