John Deere 3673.04 – ECU: Exhaust Throttle Actuator Position Signal Out Of Range Low

Indicates an open circuit or a lower-than-expected voltage on the position feedback wire for the exhaust throttle actuator. When this code is active, the system will force a duty cycle to prevent the exhaust throttle actuator from hitting the end stop, which can lead to engine power derate conditions.

   Check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the exhaust throttle actuator (specifically the position feedback and supply voltage wires) for open circuits, chafing, or corrosion.

   Inspect the exhaust throttle actuator (located in the exhaust stream after the turbocharger) for excessive soot buildup, which can cause the valve to stick and create a position mismatch.

   Verify the actuator supply voltage to ensure the component is receiving adequate power from the ECU.

   Preparation

   Ensure the engine is cool and relieve any system pressures.

   Drain Coolant

   Drain the engine coolant, as you will need to disconnect the cooling lines attached to the actuator.

   Disconnect Lines and Wiring

   Disconnect the electrical connector to the exhaust throttle actuator. Remove the exhaust throttle actuator coolant return line and coolant supply line.

   Remove Actuator

   Remove the flange nuts/cap screws securing the exhaust tube and the exhaust throttle actuator assembly to the bracket. Remove the linkage connected to the exhaust throttle valve.

   Discard Gasket

   Remove and discard the old exhaust gasket.

   Install New Actuator

   Install the new exhaust throttle actuator onto the bracket using a new gasket. Reattach the linkage. Tighten the flange nuts to the OEM specification (e.g., 20 N·m or 177 lb.-in.).

   Reconnect Lines

   Reinstall the coolant supply and return lines, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Refill and Bleed

   Refill the engine with the appropriate coolant and bleed the cooling system to remove air pockets.

   Calibration

   Connect an electronic service tool (such as John Deere Service ADVISOR) and perform the "Exhaust throttle actuator learn value reset" to calibrate the new sensor to the ECU.
