John Deere 3711.31 – ECU: Diesel Particulate Filter Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to Low Exhaust Gas Temperature

Issue description

The target temperature for the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) inlet was not achieved during the exhaust temperature management (ETM) process. Because the exhaust gas temperature is too low, the system prevents active regeneration, which leads to an accumulation of soot in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Check the cause

  1. Check engine load and operating conditions to ensure the engine is being run under sufficient load to naturally reach necessary exhaust gas temperatures.

  2. Inspect the exhaust system for any physical blockages or restrictions preventing adequate temperature buildup.

  3. Monitor and test exhaust temperature sensors (specifically the DOC inlet temperature sensor) using a diagnostic tool for implausible readings or stuck values.

Repair steps

  1. Address Operating Conditions

    If the machine has been idling excessively or running under very light loads, operate the machine under a heavy load to see if the exhaust temperatures can reach the target threshold naturally.

  2. Clean/Clear Restrictions

    If the exhaust inspection reveals blockages, clean or replace the restricted exhaust components.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensors

    If the diagnostic tool shows that the DOC inlet temperature sensor (or other exhaust temperature sensors) is malfunctioning, out of range, or failing to read accurately, replace the sensor.

  4. Initiate Manual Regeneration

    Once the physical issue (load, restriction, or sensor) is resolved, manually initiate a parked DPF regeneration via the CommandCenter or diagnostic tool to reduce the accumulated soot level.

  5. Reset ECU and Verify

    After the regeneration completes successfully, reset the ECU to clear the fault code and verify that the system can now perform active regeneration under normal conditions.
