John Deere 3719.13 – ECU: Excessive DPF Recovery Attempts

Issue description

Triggered when the controller detects that the number of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) recovery attempts—without a successful active regeneration—has exceeded the programmed limit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the operator has not accidentally left the 'Regen Inhibit' switch engaged

  2. Ensure the engine is reaching adequate operating temperatures and loads (light-load, stop-and-go, or excessive idling prevents the exhaust from getting hot enough to complete a passive or active regeneration)

  3. Check the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and DPF for physical blockages, damage, or exhaust leaks

  4. Look for related soot-level codes (e.g., 003719.14, 003719.15, 003719.16) which indicate how severely restricted the filter currently is

Repair steps

  1. Immediate Parked Regeneration

    Initiate a manual/parked service regeneration via the CommandCenter™ display or John Deere Service ADVISOR. Ensure the machine is parked outside, away from combustible materials, and run the cycle to completion to reduce the soot level.

  2. Address Inhibiting Factors

    If the parked regeneration fails to start or complete, resolve any underlying issues (such as faulty exhaust temperature sensors, low coolant temps, or intake leaks) that are preventing the cycle.

  3. Service the DPF

    If the filter is too restricted (often accompanied by code 003719.14 'Calculated Soot Level Extremely High'), the DPF must be removed from the machine. It will either need to be professionally baked/cleaned at an authorized facility or replaced entirely.

  4. Reset the ECU

    After cleaning or replacing the DPF, use a diagnostic tool to reset the ECU, clear the fault codes, and reset the DPF ash/soot timers so the system knows a clean filter has been installed.

  5. Test Drive

    Operate the machine under load to verify that soot levels remain within acceptable limits and the code does not return.
