John Deere 3719.15 – ECU: Calculated Soot Level Slightly High

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has calculated that the soot level inside the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is slightly higher than the expected normal operating level. However, the system is unable to perform an active exhaust filter cleaning (regeneration) because the operator has disabled the "Auto Cleaning" function via the regen switch or monitor.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Auto Regen Setting: Access the CAN Monitor Unit (CMU) or CommandCenter display and verify that the 'Auto Exhaust Filter Cleaning' is enabled.

  2. Check for Related Active DTCs: Look for other codes that might prevent regeneration or cause excessive soot (e.g., EGR valve faults 002791.06, turbocharger actuator faults 002795.07, air filter restriction faults 107.00/107.15, or DPF differential pressure sensor mismatch codes 003251.07).

  3. Monitor DPF Parameters: Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to monitor the DPF soot load and differential pressure. If the differential pressure drops and then climbs erratically during a regen, the sensor may be failing.

  4. Physical Inspection: Inspect the DPF differential pressure sensor tubes/lines for blockages, melting, or cracking.

Repair steps

  1. Enable Auto Cleaning

    Navigate to the Engine settings page on the CAN monitor unit (CMU) or CommandCenter and turn the Exhaust Filter Auto Cleaning setting to the "ON" or "AUTO" position.

  2. Assist Auto Cleaning

    If conditions are safe, operate the engine at high idle (above 1000 RPM) under load to increase exhaust temperatures and assist the auto-cleaning process.

  3. Perform Parked/Service Regeneration

    If auto cleaning does not clear the code, initiate a manual/parked Service Regeneration using the machine's display or John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  4. Perform DPF Service Recovery

    If the soot load is too high for a standard regen, use Service ADVISOR to perform a DPF Service Recovery (which can take ~3 hours), followed by another Service Regeneration.

  5. Replace Faulty Sensors

    If the regeneration fails to complete or a differential pressure mismatch code appears during the process, replace the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor and clear the codes.

  6. Clean/Replace DPF

    If the soot level is extremely high (progressing to 3719.16 or 3719.00) and service regenerations fail, the DPF must be removed and professionally cleaned (baked/blown out) or replaced.
