Issue description

The engine's control system has calculated that the soot level inside the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is moderately higher than expected, meaning the exhaust filter is restricted. When this code is active, the system will typically derate engine power (often to 85%) and limit machine functions to protect the engine.

Check the cause

  2. Verify the machine meets the strict safety and operational parameters required for a Parked Regeneration (engine at low idle, coolant above 60°C/140°F, park brake engaged, PTO off)

Repair steps

  1. Relocate the Machine

    Move the equipment to a safe, well-ventilated outdoor location away from combustible materials, as exhaust temperatures will become extremely high during regeneration.

  2. Initiate Parked Regeneration

    Navigate to the engine settings page on the CommandCenter or TechControl display. Ensure the criteria mentioned above (temp, brake, PTO) are met. The parked regeneration icon should begin blinking. Press and hold the button under the parked regeneration icon for 5 seconds to start the process.

  3. Monitor the Process

    Allow the machine to complete the cycle. Do not use any other machine functions while the regeneration is taking place, or the process will abort. This process can take several hours depending on the soot load.

  4. Post-Regeneration Test

    Once completed, run the machine under normal load to verify the code clears and does not return.

  5. Address Sensor Failures (If Regen Fails)

    If the regeneration aborts, or if you notice the soot load drops initially but immediately climbs back up, replace the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor, clear the codes using John Deere Service Advisor, and perform a Service Recovery Regeneration.

  6. Address Ash Accumulation

    If the filter is physically packed with ash (which cannot be burned off like soot) and will not regenerate, the DPF must be removed from the exhaust enclosure and either professionally cleaned using specialized equipment or replaced entirely.
