John Deere 3719.16 – ECU: Calculated Soot Level Moderately High / Exhaust Filter restricted

Issue description

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has accumulated a moderately high level of soot, and the engine control system has likely limited engine power (derate) to prevent damage. A parked filter cleaning (regeneration) is required immediately.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related active codes that might inhibit regeneration, such as EGR valve faults, throttle signal issues, or DPF differential pressure sensor mismatches (e.g., ECU 003251.07)

  2. Verify engine coolant temperature is above 60°C (140°F) to ensure a parked regeneration can initiate

  3. Check fuel level to ensure the machine has adequate fuel for the regeneration process

  4. Inspect the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor, as a failing sensor can falsely report high soot loads or cause regenerations to fail

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Machine

    Move the equipment to a safe, well-ventilated location away from combustible materials, as exhaust temperatures will become extremely high.

  2. Meet Regeneration Criteria

    Ensure the engine is running at low idle, the coolant temperature is above 60°C (140°F), the park brake is engaged, and the PTO is turned off.

  3. Initiate Parked Regeneration

    Navigate to the TechControl or CommandCenter DPF status screen. Press and hold the button under the blinking parked regeneration icon for 5 seconds to start the process. Do not use any other machine functions during this time.

  4. Service Advisor Intervention

    If the parked regeneration fails (e.g., engine shuts down due to ECU protection or filter is too restricted), a qualified technician must connect the John Deere Service Advisor tool to clear latched DTCs and command a 'DPF Service Recovery' followed by a 'Service Regeneration'.

  5. Component Replacement

    If the Service Regeneration fails or the soot load drops and then immediately climbs back up, replace the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor. If the DPF is physically face-plugged or has reached its maximum ash capacity, remove and professionally clean or replace it.
