John Deere 3719 – ECU: Calculated Soot Level Extremely High

Issue description

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the calculated soot level in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) reaches a critical, extremely high state. Because excessive soot accumulation severely impedes exhaust flow, the system triggers a "Red Stop Lamp" warning. To protect the engine and the aftertreatment system from catastrophic damage, the ECU will severely limit (derate) engine power and disable the PTO.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Related Sensor Codes: Look for code 3251.07 (DPF Differential Pressure Signal Mismatch). A failed differential pressure sensor is a highly common culprit that falsely reports an extremely high soot load, preventing regeneration.

  2. Check Operator Settings: Verify if the operator manually disabled the 'Auto Exhaust Filter Cleaning' mode. Disabling this mode routinely leads to extreme soot accumulation.

  3. Check for Ash Codes: Look for codes 3720.15 or 3720.16, which indicate the filter is full of incombustible ash rather than soot, requiring physical cleaning rather than regeneration.

  4. Inspect Physical Lines: Inspect the sensor tubes running from the DPF to the differential pressure sensor for blockages, melting, or cracks.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Move the machine to a safe, well-ventilated location away from combustible materials, as forced regenerations generate extreme exhaust temperatures.

  2. Address Sensor Failures

    If a differential pressure sensor code (like 3251.07) is present, replace the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor first. Attempting a regeneration with a faulty sensor will fail.

  3. Initiate Service Regeneration

    Because the soot level is "Extremely High," standard parked regeneration is locked out by the ECU. A qualified technician must connect a diagnostic tool (John Deere Service ADVISOR) to initiate a Service Regeneration (or Service Recovery).

  4. Monitor Parameters

    While the Service Regeneration is running (which can take 1 to 3 hours), monitor the DPF soot load and differential pressure parameters. If the pressure drops initially but then climbs back up, the sensor may be failing under heat, or the filter is permanently restricted.

  5. Clear Codes

    Once the Service Regeneration completes successfully, use Service ADVISOR to reset the soot load parameters and clear the DTCs.

  6. DPF Replacement/Baking (If Regen Fails)

    If the Service Regeneration fails, or if the filter is physically plugged with ash/damaged, the DPF must be removed. It will need to be sent to a certified facility for professional ash cleaning (baking) or replaced entirely.
