3720.16

John Deere 3720.16 – ECU: Calculated Ash Level Moderately High

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has calculated that the ash accumulation in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has reached a moderately high level, reducing the filter's soot storage capacity and increasing exhaust back pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Check the DPF Status Screen on the CommandCenter or corner post display to verify if the 'Parked Cleaning Required' icon is active.

  2. Check for accompanying codes such as 3719.16 (Parked Cleaning Required) or 3936.00 (Unexpected temperature in Exhaust Filter) which may indicate secondary issues.

  3. Verify the machine's filter status is set to Auto Mode so it can attempt passive regenerations.

Repair steps

  1. Perform a Parked Regeneration

Initiate a parked filter cleaning (regeneration) via the engine settings page as outlined in the Operator's Manual. A forced regeneration by a qualified technician can clear the immediate soot load and reset the parameters.

  2. Evaluate Post-Regeneration

If DTC 003720.16 persists after a successful parked regeneration, the DPF has reached its maximum physical ash capacity.

  3. Remove the DPF

The DPF must be removed from the machine for physical servicing.

  4. Professional Ash Cleaning or Replacement

The DPF must be placed into specialized equipment (such as a high-temperature kiln/blast and bake system) by a professional service to extract the ash. Do NOT attempt to remove ash using water, compressed air, or chemicals.

  5. Reinstall or Replace

If the DPF is severely restricted or damaged, it must be replaced with a new or remanufactured unit. Reinstall the cleaned or new DPF using new gaskets and V-clamps.
