3842.01

John Deere 3842.01 – XMC/XSC: Wheel Angle Sensor Channel 2, Voltage Too Low

Issue description

This error code indicates that a voltage below 0.25 volts is registered at Channel 2 of the front axle Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS). This suggests a signal loss, a short to ground, or a failing sensor, which directly impacts the responsiveness and accuracy of the AutoTrac™ automatic steering system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the wheel angle sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. (Note: A highly common issue is a broken wire hidden inside the insulation; load testing the harness is recommended)

  2. Inspect the physical wheel angle sensor and its linkage for signs of damage, wear, or broken internal components, ensuring it is securely mounted to the kingpin/axle

  3. Monitor the sensor signal in real-time using a diagnostic tool or cab monitor while turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify if the signal drops out

  4. Check for and install any available updates for the XMC/XSC control software to address potential signal processing bugs

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground if repairing the wiring harness.

  2. Harness Repair/Replacement

If the diagnostic load test reveals a broken wire, either repair the break or replace the Wheel Angle Sensor Wiring Harness entirely.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If faulty, disconnect the wiring harness from the wheel angle sensor. Unbolt the sensor linkage and remove the sensor bracket from the axle housing. Install the new wheel angle sensor and reattach the linkage.

  4. Recalibration

Once the new sensor or harness is installed, you must recalibrate the wheel angle sensor through the John Deere armrest display/CommandCenter. Turn the wheels fully left, fully right, and center as prompted by the calibration wizard.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the XMC 003842.01 diagnostic trouble code from the system and test drive to verify AutoTrac functionality.
