John Deere 3976.05 – RLC (Roof Lighting Control Unit): Dome Light, Current Too Low

Issue description

The ".05" Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) indicates a "Current Below Normal or Open Circuit" condition. This means the control module is detecting that the electrical current drawn by the cab dome light circuit is lower than expected, or there is no current flowing at all. This is most commonly caused by a blown light bulb, a broken wire (open circuit), a disconnected harness, or a faulty door switch failing to provide a ground path. Note: If you recently upgraded the dome light to an aftermarket LED bulb, this code can be triggered because LEDs draw significantly less amperage.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual bulb check by removing the dome light lens and inspecting the bulb filament for a blown bulb

  2. Test voltage and ground at the dome light socket using a digital multimeter to ensure 12V power and a solid ground when the door is open or the switch is activated

  3. Inspect the door switch for sticking or corrosion, as it provides the ground path for the circuit

  4. Check the wiring harness routed near the door hinge for internal breaks caused by repeated opening and closing

  5. Inspect the RLC harness connectors plugging into the module in the cab roof for loose pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent short circuits while working on the roof electronics.

  2. Replace the Bulb

    If the bulb is blown, replace it with the correct OEM halogen bulb (or an OEM-approved LED that has built-in CAN-bus resistors to prevent the low-amp code).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the bulb is intact but there is no ground at the socket, trace the ground wire down the cab pillar to the door switch.

  4. Replace Door Switch

    If the door switch fails a continuity test when released, replace the switch and clean the mounting area to ensure it makes a good ground with the cab frame.

  5. Splice Hinge Wiring

    If a wire is broken at the door hinge pivot point, cut out the fatigued section of wire and splice in a new section using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the tractor's CommandCenter display (or a diagnostic tool like Service ADVISOR) to clear the 003976.05 code. Open the door to verify the dome light illuminates.
