Issue description

This code triggers when the Engine Control Unit detects that the temperature of the recirculated exhaust gas is moderately above the specified operating range. This condition is typically caused by high engine loads, poor EGR cooling, or a restricted cooling system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the radiator and cooling system for debris, chaff, or dirt buildup that could restrict airflow and reduce cooling efficiency

  2. Check the EGR cooler for internal fouling, soot blockages, or coolant leaks, which can prevent the cooler from properly lowering the exhaust gas temperature

  3. Verify the EGR temperature sensor's wiring harness for shorts or damage, and ensure the sensor is reading accurately

  4. Evaluate engine load to determine if the machine was being operated under excessively high loads, which can naturally drive up EGR temperatures

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Cooling System

    Thoroughly blow out or wash the radiator and cooling packages to ensure maximum airflow.

  2. Clean the EGR Valve and Cooler

    Remove and clean out the EGR valve(s) and the EGR cooler to remove soot and carbon buildup.

  3. Replace Faulty Components

    If cleaning does not resolve the issue, or if the EGR cooler is internally compromised (leaking or permanently fouled), replace the EGR cooler or the EGR temperature sensor.

  4. Calibrate the System

    If the EGR valve or sensor is replaced, use the John Deere Service Advisor diagnostic tool to perform a calibration reset on the new components.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the ECU codes and run the machine under a normal working load to verify the exhaust temperatures remain within specification.
