John Deere 4334 – ECU: DEF Dosing Unit Pressure Extremely High

Issue description

Triggers when the pressure within the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) dosing unit (also known as the supply module or DEF pump) exceeds the maximum allowable threshold. High pressure in this system is typically the result of a physical blockage—such as crystallized DEF, frozen fluid, or a clogged injection nozzle—or a failure within the pump's internal pressure regulation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the DEF dosing unit, supply lines, and return lines for kinks, blockages, or crystallized DEF (DEF crystallizes when exposed to air and freezes at 12°F).

  2. Inspect the DEF dosing injection nozzle at the exhaust stream for debris or crystallized DEF preventing fluid escape.

  3. Verify that the DEF line heaters are functioning properly, as failed heaters can cause DEF to freeze and spike pressure.

  4. Verify that the pressure sensors are providing accurate readings to the ECU and check for wiring faults such as a short circuit.

  5. Use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR or TEXA) to run a DEF Dosing Unit Override/Vacuum test to monitor live pressures and check for blockages or leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery (negative terminal first) before servicing electrical or emission components.

  2. Relieve Pressure & Clean

Relieve any residual pressure in the DEF lines. Clean up any spilled DEF immediately, as it is highly corrosive to metals and plastics.

  3. Clear Blockages

If a blockage is found in the lines or the injection nozzle, clean or replace the affected plumbing/nozzle.

  4. Remove the DEF Pump

If the pump itself has failed, disconnect the electrical harnesses and the DEF fluid lines from the dosing unit. Unbolt the pump assembly from its mounting bracket (often tank-mounted or chassis-mounted).

  5. Install New Components

Install the replacement DEF Dosing Unit Pump. It is highly recommended to replace the DEF pump filter at the same time.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect all fluid lines and electrical connectors securely. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Reset and Test

Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ECU fault codes. Run the machine and perform a system test to ensure the DEF system maintains correct pressure without leaking.
