John Deere 4343.06 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF Dosing Unit Return Line Heater, Resistance Too Low
Issue description
The circuit resistance is too low, indicating a short to ground in the heater circuit. This prevents the heater from functioning properly, which can lead to DEF freezing in the lines during cold conditions, preventing proper DEF injection and emissions control.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the DEF dosing unit return line heater circuit for frayed wires, melted insulation, or chassis rubbing.
Disconnect the DEF line heater and measure resistance across the heater element pins with a multimeter (near zero indicates internal failure).
Test the harness side of the circuit for continuity to ground with the heater disconnected to check for harness short circuits.
Verify the electrical supply to the heater is stable and within 12V specifications.

Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical and emissions systems.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire, apply heat-shrink tubing, and secure the harness away from sharp edges or high-heat sources.
Replace the DEF Line Heater
If the heater element failed the resistance test, replace the DEF line. Disconnect the electrical connector, relieve residual pressure, disconnect fittings, route the new heated DEF line in the exact same orientation, and reconnect fittings and connector.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a John Deere Service Advisor tool (or equivalent heavy-duty scanner) to clear the ECU 004343.06 fault code.
Monitor System
Run the engine and monitor the DEF system operation to ensure the code does not return and the heater operates correctly.
