John Deere 4360.12 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): SCR Inlet Temperature Faulty

The SCR temperature module detects a problem with measuring the exhaust gas temperature at the inlet of the SCR canister. The FMI 12 identifier points to a bad intelligent device or internal failure, indicating a loss of communication with the SCR Temperature Module or the module itself indicating an error. If the ECU cannot read this temperature, it cannot properly dose Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

   Inspect wiring and connections between the SCR inlet temperature sensor, the exhaust filter temperature module, and the ECU for damage, fraying, or looseness.

   Test the sensor circuit using a multimeter or diagnostic tool for continuity, correct voltage levels, and proper ground.

   Check the sensor probe and its surrounding exhaust bung for heavy soot or contaminants that could insulate the sensor and affect temperature readings.

   Verify module communication with the ECU using a diagnostic scan tool (like Service ADVISOR) to ensure the SCR Temperature Module is communicating properly.

   Safety First

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the SCR Inlet Temperature Sensor, which is threaded into the exhaust pipe directly at the inlet of the SCR canister/catalyst.

   Disconnect Electronics

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector linking the sensor to the equipment's wiring harness.

   Remove the Sensor

   Use a wrench to unthread the faulty SCR inlet temperature sensor from the exhaust pipe.

   Install the New Sensor

   Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung. Torque it to the manufacturer's specification (for example, John Deere sprayers specify 45 N·m or 33 lb·ft for the SCR Inlet Temperature Sensor).

   Reconnect and Route

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the wire is routed away from direct heat sources and secured.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 004360.12 fault code from the ECU. Start the engine and monitor the SCR inlet temperature data to verify the repair.
