John Deere 4366.06 – ECU / DCU: DEF Tank Heater Coolant Control Valve Circuit Has Low Resistance

Issue description

The system uses engine coolant to thaw and heat the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in cold conditions, regulated by a thermostatic coolant control valve. This fault code triggers when the controller detects that the circuit current for the DEF tank coolant control valve is higher than expected. A low resistance reading in this circuit typically indicates a short circuit to ground.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the DEF coolant control valve circuit for damaged, frayed, or melted wiring that could be shorting to the chassis (ground).

  2. Measure Resistance: Disconnect the DEF header connector and measure the resistance across the coolant control valve pins (often pins 4 and 5). Compare the reading to the OEM specification to confirm if the internal solenoid is shorted.

  3. Test Valve Operation: Use a diagnostic scan tool to command the coolant control valve open and closed. Monitor the amperage draw to see if it spikes, which confirms the low resistance/high amp condition.

  4. Check for Debris: Check for debris such as casting sand lodged in the coolant control valve located in the DEF tank header.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Repair or Replace the Harness

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness leading to the DEF header, repair the damaged wire or replace the specific DEF Coolant Control Valve Harness.

  3. Replace the DEF Header

    If the valve's internal solenoid is shorted, replace the entire DEF Header Assembly, as the valve cannot be replaced separately.

  4. Reassemble and Refill

    Install the new header assembly, reconnect the coolant lines and electrical harnesses, and ensure the DEF tank is filled with clean, uncontaminated fluid.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the ECU/DCU fault codes, and run the machine. Monitor the DEF tank temperature and circuit amperage to verify the repair.
