John Deere 4366.16 – ECU: DEF Tank Temperature Moderately High — DEF Tank Heater Coolant Control Valve is Stuck Open

Issue description

To prevent Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) from freezing in cold climates, John Deere routes warm engine coolant through the DEF tank. The flow of this coolant is regulated by the DEF Tank Heater Coolant Control Valve. If this valve becomes mechanically stuck open (often due to debris like casting sand) or electrically shorted to a voltage source, engine coolant will flow continuously into the DEF tank heater. This causes the DEF fluid to overheat, typically exceeding the 66°C (150°F) threshold, triggering the code and potentially leading to an engine derate.

Check the cause

  1. Check DEF fluid level — low DEF levels heat up much faster than a full tank. Topping off can sometimes temporarily resolve the high-temperature threshold issue.

  2. Inspect the DEF coolant control valve wiring harness for frayed wires, corrosion, or a short circuit to a voltage source.

  3. Test valve resistance using a multimeter at the DEF header connector (typically pins 4 and 5) and compare against OEM specifications to check for an internal short.

  4. Command the valve using a John Deere diagnostic scan tool (Service ADVISOR) to manually open and close it. Listen and feel for the mechanical click of the solenoid.

  5. Inspect the coolant lines leading to the DEF header for debris (like casting sand) that could wedge the valve open.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the engine coolant to cool completely to avoid burns.

  2. Isolate Coolant

    Drain the engine coolant, or use hose-pinch pliers to clamp off the engine coolant supply and return lines going to the DEF tank header to prevent fluid loss.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector, the DEF supply/return lines, and the coolant lines from the top of the DEF header.

  4. Remove the Header

    Unbolt the retaining ring or flange bolts securing the DEF header to the top of the DEF tank. Carefully pull the header assembly straight up and out of the tank.

  5. Clean and Inspect

    Inspect the inside of the DEF tank for contamination or crystallized DEF. Clean the mounting flange.

  6. Install New Parts

    Insert the new DEF header assembly (with the new integrated coolant control valve) into the tank. Secure the flange bolts/ring.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the coolant lines, DEF lines, and electrical connectors.

  8. Refill and Bleed

    Unclamp the coolant lines (or refill the engine coolant). Bleed the cooling system of any air pockets.

  9. Clear Codes

    Turn the key on, use a diagnostic tool to clear the ECU 004366.16 code, and run the machine to verify the DEF temperature remains stable.
