444.04

John Deere 444.04 – HCC (Hitch Control Module): Supply Voltage Too Low / Unswitched Battery Voltage Low

Issue description

Indicates that the supply voltage to the module (often monitored at a specific terminal, such as Pin J4) has dropped below the minimum operating threshold (typically below 9 volts). This is an electrical supply issue, not a mechanical failure of the hitch itself.

Applies to these machines

  • 5090M
  • 5100M
  • 5100MH
  • 5100ML
  • 5115M
  • 5115ML
  • 6090MC
  • 6100MC
  • 6110MC
  • 6090RC
  • 6100RC
  • 6110RC
  • 6145R

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery load test to ensure the battery can maintain proper voltage (above 9V) during high-draw events like engine cranking

  2. Check fuses and ignition/power relays on the hitch control module circuit for failures

  3. Inspect the unswitched battery supply wiring and connectors to the HCC (specifically terminal J4) for rubbed-through wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion

  4. Check chassis and module ground connections for poor contact; clean and tighten ground straps

  5. Determine if the DTC periodically goes away (if it only appears during startup, the battery is likely the culprit)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Resolve Supply Issues

If the battery failed the load test, replace it. If the alternator is undercharging, repair or replace the alternator.

  3. Repair Harness/Connectors

If corrosion or wire damage was found at the HCC connector, use an electrical contact cleaner and replace any damaged pins. Splice and heat-shrink any damaged wires in the supply harness.

  4. Replace the Module (If Necessary)

If the battery is fully charged, the alternator is working, and a multimeter confirms steady, correct voltage and ground directly at the HCC connector, the module itself has an internal fault and must be replaced.

  5. Recalibrate

If the Hitch Control Module is replaced, the new module will likely require a software calibration (often triggering a secondary code like HCC 000630.13 - Control Software Not Calibrated) using John Deere Service ADVISOR.
