John Deere 444.06 – VLC, CLC, or RLC: Unswitched Supply Current High / Circuit Overload

The control module is detecting an excessive electrical current draw (amperage) on its unswitched power supply circuit, often pointing to a cab roof lighting circuit overload.

   Cycle the power by turning the key switch off and back on to see if it is a temporary trip

   Reduce electrical load by turning off all cab roof work lights, rear accessories, and non-essential electrical loads

   Inspect lighting circuits (cab roof and rear work lights) for incorrect aftermarket bulbs, melted bulb sockets, or water intrusion causing a short to ground

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the VLC or CLC for chafing, pinched wires, or damaged insulation shorting against the chassis

   Use a multimeter to test the unswitched battery power supply pins at the module to verify if the current draw is genuinely high

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system.

   Isolate the Short

   Disconnect the lighting harnesses from the VLC/CLC one by one. Reconnect power and check if the code returns. This will help isolate which specific lighting or accessory branch is causing the high current draw.

   Repair Wiring/Components

   Once the overloaded circuit is identified, repair any shorted wiring, clean corroded ground points, or replace faulty light fixtures.

   Check Fuses

   Inspect the main fuses supplying the VLC/CLC. If any are blown, replace them only with the exact OEM amperage rating. Never install a larger fuse to bypass an overload code.

   Module Replacement (If Necessary)

   If the external wiring and loads test perfectly fine, but the VLC or CLC continues to log the 000444.06 code and disables functions, the module itself likely has an internal short. Replace the module. Note: A new VLC or CLC will require End-Of-Line (EOL) programming and calibration by a John Deere dealer using Service ADVISOR.
