4766.15

John Deere 4766.15 – ECU: DOC Outlet Temperature Slightly High

Issue description

The exhaust filter temperature module detects that the temperature exiting the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is higher than expected, which disables active exhaust filter cleaning (DPF regeneration) and can lead to engine derate or a commanded engine shut-off.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the DOC outlet temperature sensor (B5202) for proper operation, and check the wiring harness and connectors for damage, fraying, or loose connections.

  2. Test the sensor circuit for continuity and correct voltage levels, ensuring the sensor is free from contaminants that could skew temperature readings.

  3. Inspect the fuel injection system for issues that might cause higher exhaust temperatures, such as excessive fuel injection, incorrect air-fuel ratios, or malfunctioning injectors.

  4. Inspect the exhaust system and the DOC for blockages, restrictions, wear, or damage that could contribute to elevated temperatures.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery negative (—) cable.

  2. Safety Warning

CAUTION: The exhaust filter and surrounding components get extremely hot during operation. Allow the exhaust filter to cool completely before removal to prevent serious burns.

  3. Locate the Sensor

Locate the DOC outlet temperature sensor (B5202) on the exhaust aftertreatment system, typically situated between the DOC and the DPF.

  4. Removal

Disconnect the wire harness connector from the sensor. Carefully unscrew and remove the faulty DOC outlet temperature sensor from the exhaust tube/filter housing.

  5. Installation

Apply appropriate high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor.

  6. Torque

Thread the new sensor into place and tighten it to the specified torque (OEM manuals generally specify 25 N·m to 34 N·m for these exhaust sensors, though you should verify with your specific machine's manual).

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the wire harness connector to the sensor and secure any tie straps or hold-down clamps. Reconnect the battery negative (—) cable.

  8. Clear Codes

Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to reset the ECU, clear the 004766.15 fault code, and monitor the system to ensure temperatures return to normal ranges and active exhaust filter cleaning is restored.
